Saturday, the University of Georgia's football program nabbed its first SEC title since 2005, when the Bulldogs' faceoff was staged against LSU's Tigers. That day, UGA walked away with a victory by a margin of 20 points under the direction of head coach Mark Richt in Atlanta's Georgia Dome.
12 years later, and two seasons after the controversial firing of Richt, UGA took the title back with a vengeance in mind, beating out Auburn University by 21 points in a score of 28-7 right next door in the newly-constructed Mercedes Benz Stadium.
Three weeks ago, it was the Tigers who exerted dominance—one that was almost nowhere to be found Saturday afternoon. As UGA now moves on to the College Football Playoffs, this marks the first time that that a team in the SEC East has won the title in eight years, and the first time since 2011 that a team other than Alabama or Auburn advances with the title.
