For the past few days, rappers, athletes, socialites and celebrities as a whole have gathered in New York City for the annual New York Fashion Week. One of the most talked about events during NYFW over this weekend was Phillip Plein's Spring 2018 event. Social media was poppin' off with clips of all the madness that occurred throughout the evening. However, it turns out that during one point in the evening Nicki Minaj reportedly had some words for the fashion industry as a whole.
In a report from the Cut, they said that during the after-party, Nicki Minaj called out the fashion industry at large for their continuous appropriation of black culture after she thanked Phillip Plein for his inclusive runway show.
"Thank you Philipp Plein for including our culture," Nicki said, "Designers get really big and really rich off of our culture, and then you don’t see a motherfucker that look anything like us in the front row half the time. So let’s make some noise for Philipp Plein tonight."
The runway included a diverse group of models showcasing Plein's Spring 2018 clothing line. Among the models 21 Savage, Rich The Kid, Snoop Dogg's son and father, Cordell Broadus and Vernell Verado, Golden Barbie, Kinoshita Manama, Teyana Taylor and many more. The audience had even more stars with the likes of Young Thug, 50 Cent, Ne-Yo, Fabolous and many more in attendance.
Phillip Plein's runway show was one of the most talked about shows thusfar. Nicki Minaj also brought out a slew of surprise guests during her performance. While she took the stage, she brought out 21 Savage at one point to perform their London On Da Track collaboration "No Flags," Yo Gotti came out as well to perform "Rake It Up" for the first time ever and she also brought out Rae Sremmurd for a performance of "Black Beatles."
Plein's extravaganza reportedly cost $7 Million to put on. Alongside the celebrity guests he brought, he had also transformed Hammerstein Ballroom into a cabaret for the night. It definitely took an informal approach to how a runway show typically looks like. He had cafe tables surrounding the runway with a huge neon sign with his name on it.
