Nicki Minaj gets coy with John Mayer.

John Mayer is one of music's most respected contemporary guitarists, but this time it was Nicki Minaj who was hitting all of his high notes with a reference to one of his hit songs from the 1990's.

The fun began this past Friday, when Mayer tweeted out this rather innocuous message:

Big deal right? Lots of people pontificate about whether or not their "secret" crush would like them back or not, sometimes turning to other social media users for comfort or advice. What doesn't often happen, though, are the following two things: first, that person who you may be crushing on is a well-known celebrity; and second, he or she responds back with a one-liner that's pretty much perfect. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Nicki Minaj:

The response definitely caught Mayer off-guard, needing to take a second and attempt to formulate what would be a cool, seemingly effortless response. Minaj continued to have a little fun with the situation at Mayer's expense, coyly adding that she was just "asking for a friend."

Mayer is a noted ladies man in the music business, having dated the likes of Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and others. Has he turned his affections to Minaj? Is so, he might have to get in line, as the "No Frauds" rapper has been romantically linked to legendary NYC rapper Nas, although neither of them have confirmed or denied any relationship to the public. Additionally, there's the irony of this tweet taken as a complete 180 to a Playboy interview he did back in 2010, where he voiced his preference for white women when it comes to romantic encounters.

"My d--k is sort of like a white supremacist," Mayer said, in an excerpt taken from a Billboard report on the article. "I've got a Benetton heart and a f---in David Duke cock. I'm going to start dating separately from my d--k." It's a slightly troubling quote, especially considering that his response came as a bit of an off-shoot to a question about his large African-American fan base. Regardless of that baggage, let's hope he trades in his guitar for a super bass next time he sees Nicki Minaj in person.
