Roy Woods' proper debut has been a long time coming, or so it feels. Perhaps it's just because we've seriously been tracking, one might say near-stalking, his career since he first popped up on Soundcloud with the haunting "I Got." This was back when he still had the $ in his name in place of an 'S' -- at that time, it was still supremely popular, but we've seen more and more artists let go of any attachment to the "$." Perhaps loosing the $ in one's name is just a part of growing up and maturing -- the same way Roy's sound has done grown up since signing with OVO.
Case in point, Roy Woods' opening track on his Say Less debut is a mature, cinematic r'n'b record. It's so dope we had to pick it out as a highlight. Roy's new album explores a few different sounds, any day-one fan would gravitate towards "Medusa" immediately, it feels like an improved twist on the r'n'b he was first exploring back in the Soundcloud days. Elsewhere on the album, though, he dips into what feels like UK, pop vibes, taking a cue from Drake. Listen to the new album here.
Quotable Lyrics
All she like is gold
I call her Medusa
Same thing with the hoe
Only there when she need me
All she like is gold
