New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez survived one of the scariest things that can happen to a big league catcher, or a catcher at any level for that matter, a foul tip right to the junk.
During last night's Wild-Card matchup against the Twins at Yankee Stadium, Minnesota's Brian Dozier fouled off a pitch from Yankees right-hander David Robertson, and the ball found its way directly into poor Gary Sanchez's crotch. The reaction from Robertson immediately after was priceless.
After the game, Robertson, who was the winning pitcher in last night's game, told reporters,
“Poor guy. I had a great view of it, he just took a tough shot right there,” Robertson said. “I just felt for him. I’m wearing a cup, too. I just know how it feels to get hit there. It’s not fun.”
The Yankees went on to win the game 8-4, advancing to the American League Division Series. They will now travel to Cleveland for a matchup against the defending American League champion Cleveland Indians, a team that won 102 games this season.
The ALDS is scheduled to begin tomorrow, October 5th, which will hopefully give the Yanks' equipment manager enough time to get Sanchez some extra protection before that series kicks off.
