For the second year, Detroit will honor one of their greatest artists of all-time with the Second Annual “Dillay Day Tribute”, which will be headlined by Motown spitta Royce Da 5’9, and legendary emcee, Talib Kweli.
J Dilla passed away roughly 7 years ago at the young age of 32 from complications of lupus, but he left behind of the greatest hip hop catalogues ever heard, and worked so relentlessly that music of his continued to be released well after his death.
The even honoring Jay Dee, born James Yancey, will take place in the D’s famed Fillmore on February 9th, and in addition to the hosts Royce and Kweli, 313 duo Frank N Dank will perform, as well as soul-jazz group the B. Williams Experiment, and Dilla’s own younger brother, John “Illa J” Yancey.
A producer credited by many for his influential and ground-breaking techniques, he remained busy even when his health was fading. Portions of the proceeds will go to the J Dilla Foundation, and the event will include the premiere of Lost Scolls Volume I, a collection of the famed producers works being released by Delicious Vinyl records.
