Jason Derulo, the consummate craftsman when it comes to radio-ready hip-hop and R&B hooks, is back with a new single called "Tip Toe." Enlisting Mr. Unforgettable, French Montana, as the featured artist, the track covers much of the same ground that he did with Nicki Minaj on "Swalla" and, based on how that song did in terms of chart position, airplay and streams, I'd say the formula isn't a bad one to revisit.
With a suitably reggae-style beat that also has at least a couple of those tip toes in an electro-type sound, the instrumental is more or less typical of today's urban radio environment. There are definitely some similarities not only with "Swalla," but French's aforementioned summer hit as well, dialing down the tempo but by no means killing the heat on the dance floor. With seductive lyrics, featuring Derulo asking the woman he's interested to shake it for him when she's up close and personal with him. the song further solidifies the "Talk Dirty" singer as one of the genre's foremost ladies men. By contrast, French Montana isn't given a tremendous amount to do here, but his presence is more than welcome on a track that will surely make a push to become a radio mainstay in time for the holiday season and into the new year.
The question now turns to what Derulo will have in store for his fans on his next album, reportedly titled 777. With some high-profile assists more than likely to crop up on select songs, we'll see if he's able to carry his energy and charisma through and entire LP and make it have some staying power, no doubt looking to someone like a Bruno Mars for inspiration in that department. In any event, "Tip Toe" seems like another solid outing and potentially forecasts some equally strong work ahead from Jason Derulo.
Quotable Lyrics
Left, right, do it just like that
Hold tight when you tip toe
Shake some then you tip toe
