Kid Cudi is nothing if not versatile. He's dipped his toes into the world of film and television numerous times before. Most notably on Entergalactic, the animated Netflix special that Cudi created and played the lead role in. He wasn't the only musician trying his hand at voiceover work in the show as he was joined by Ty Dolla $ign, Jaden Smith, and 070 Shake. He also recorded an entire album to serve as the soundtrack to the special which dropped in tandem with it last year.
Now Cudi is dipping his toes back into voice acting with a role in the upcoming movie Trolls Band Together. According to the director in an interview with Cover Media, Cudi surprised everyone on the first day of recording. “We hire him, we talk with him, he’s excited to be a part of the Trolls universe, and then six months later, I think it was, he came in to record for the first time and he’s like, ‘I’ve been trying this voice,'" he recalled. Thankfully though, the risk seems to have paid off for both Cudi and the film. “A lot of time we encourage the actors to use their own voice to add some realism because the characters are so wild and the world is weird and so fantastic, but in this case, it just fit this character,” the director elaborated. Check out the trailer for the film below.
Kid Cudi's Unique Voice In "Trolls" Movie
It wasn't that long ago that Cudi was receiving some hate for his voice acting from fans. Just last month he shared some video online of him practicing various voices he was workshopping for animated characters. While some enjoyed the videos, they got plenty of backlash. A lot of people took the opportunity to call what he was doing childish or cringey.
Kid Cudi's new album INSANO was originally scheduled for earlier this year but has been delayed. Despite that, he's made some big promises about the record. After initially sharing that it was meant to be over 40 tracks he shed some light on potential features recently. Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, Young Thug, Lil Yachty, Pusha T and more are expected to appear.
