Common has returned to his socially-charged habitat alongside singer Andra Day to deliver on the music video for the “Stand Up For Something” track, released in tandem with the arrival of Marshall, the Reggie Hudlin-directed film that depicts Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, chronicling one of Marshall’s first cases as a young attorney.
Written by the GRAMMY-winning Diane Warren and Common, the cut features Day’s vocals at the forefront as Common eases in for a routinely perceptive verse. “I am so honored to have worked with Andra and Common on this important song. I am more proud of this song than any other I have ever written,” said Warren.
In the new clip, you can catch Com and Andra as they sport all-black outfits with the scenes simply vacillating between the duo and scenes from the film, released on Friday (October 13th).
“That’s what the song really is about,” Common previously noted of the track. “It’s about awaking the God in us. It’s about awakening the purpose that’s in us, and us as human beings to go out and make things happen on this planet for positive things.”
While we’re familiar with Common’s experience in crafting award-winning anthems for notable films highlighting prominent leaders of the African American community (see “Glory” for Selma), Andra Day is certainly no stranger to inspirational tracks herself, having made her breakout appearance in 2015 via her “Rise Up” single that has since gone on to certify as Platinum.
“I was so moved by the story of Thurgood Marshall. It was an incredible honor to not only be asked to record the lead single, but also appear in the movie,” said Day. “I’ve always dreamed of working with Diane and Common, and the experience was better than I could have ever imagined. This is such an important project. I’m thankful to be a part of it.”
