Mac Miller dropped a classic with "K.I.D.S."

In 2010, 19-year-old Mac Miller released his 4th mixtape K.I.D.S., or “Kicking Incredibly Dope S**t”, which would forever change his career and leave a lasting impact on Rap music 13 years later. After reaching 112 on the Billboard Hot 200 in its first week, K.I.D.S. would introduce the world to the emerging Pittsburgh rap scene, with features on the mixtape from fellow Taylor Gang artists Wiz Khalifa and Chevy Woods. K.I.D.S. captured a unique essence of growing up, teen angst, the styles and sounds of 2000s rap music, and masterful lyricism about adolescent life in high school and college. By creating the then-booming genre of Frat Rap and solidifying himself, his music, and his fan base, Miller forever changed the music industry.

Thirteen years later, K.I.D.S. still holds up with phenomenal, relatable lyrics, vivid imagery, and timeless production that fuses modern samples and sounds with early rap drums and breaks. In 2020, two years after Miller’s passing, Rostrum Records founder Benjy Grinberg brought K.I.D.S. to streaming services writing on Instagram, “After Macadelic came out, Mac asked if we could clear this one next. It has been challenging but we are getting through it. We miss Mac every day and we see our job as making sure his music lives on. We love you, Mac.”

Remembering "K.I.D.S." And Mac Miller

Coming up on five years since we tragically lost Miller and on the 13th anniversary of his breakout tape, we celebrate his life, passion for production, and beautiful, meaningful music that became the sound to generations of kids, students, and young adults all dealing with growing up. Only Mac could capture the pure joy of growing up in simple yet meaningful ways, “Oh, I graduated, oh yeah, I just graduated high school, haha!”
