Kap-G really started putting hip hop on notice since dropping his critically acclaimed mixtape, Like A Mexican in 2014. Since then, he penned a deal with Atlantic Records and dropped his debut album, SupaJefe, through the label. The Atlanta native has distinguished himself in the scene by with his unique approach to his music. He blends Atlanta sounds while paying homage and representing his Mexican heritage. It's an important aspect in his brand that's helped him stand-out from his contemporaries. Kap-G recently caught up with us for our latest episode of "On The Come Up" where he discussed Dragonball Z, his acting career, his first rap he wrote and more.
Kap-G celebrates Mexican heritage throughout his music. It's been evident with his album titles and his branding. His major label debut was titled SupaJefe. He explains the titles derives from the parallel he noticed between the direction in his career and his favorite TV show, DragonBall Z.
"At the time, I just felt like I was reaching another level. And one of my favorite shows of all time is DragonBall Z," he said, " And [there's] a level when they turn into Supersaiyan and I just added that to "boss" and translated it to Spanish to "Jefe". So I took Supersaiyan and said "SupaJefe." That's my Supersaiyan."
He also took us back in time to his first rap. Before making his entry into rap, his brother was already making music. He said his brother told him to write a rap and he'd help him out. After writing it, his brother approved and gave him more confidence in what he was doing. Surprisingly, he was able to remember a bit of it and recited a few bars to us.
"Never really had money, now I got a lot of that/ So many clothes, closet lookin' like a laundromat/ Now I'm bout my business man/ On chauffer, driven man/ Now I'm balling out everyday like everyday is Christmas, damn."
During our conversation with Kap-G, he also mentioned the successful year he's thus far.
"My most proudest moment has been this year. I started atleast seven or eight years a go or even longer probably. I say this year all the accomplishments that I've been having. Getting XXL freshmen, getting a Sprite deal, working with one of my favorite singers Chris Brown. It's just been an incredible year. I'm going on my first headlining tour." He said.
