LA, you took my love, you made me feel it's never enough, yeah, Hollywood, you took my heart, you made me tear that shit apart," sings Bassy, over a smooth bassline from Thundercat.
Honestly, Thundercat often stands out as the real MVP: his basslines are consistently crazy, and the way he performs on a track never fails to impress. It's only fitting, as the West Coast signature sound has always relied on dope basslines, and an appearance from Thundercat guarantees exactly that.
YG also comes through to hold it down on the track's first verse, as he spins a tale about one of his Los Angeles ladies. Thematically, we're not exactly covering any new ground here, as YG reflects on her fast-and-loose lifestyle, her proclivity for partying and late nights, and the way L.A can corrupt even the most noble intentions. "So stressed, she wanna smoke, Girl, I got shot in L.A., I know," raps YG in his closing bars, yet like Bassy, he wouldn't change anything about his location. In that regards, living in L.A. can seem a bit masochistic.
"Westside Love" comes from Marc E. Bassy's debut album Gossip Columns, and the Bay Area singer's project finds guest appearances from Kyle, Kehlani, and G-Eazy. However, this smooth collaboration is an immediate stand-out, and the arrangement during the track's latter half is stellar; Bassy's stacked harmonies blend beautifully with a string section, subtle piano, and even a fuzz-driven guitar. If you're looking for something to vibe out to, you should most definitely throw this one on.
