Terence Crawford is set to fight Errol Spence Jr. on July 29. The unification fight will see two of the sport's greatest active fighters duel for welterweight supremacy. Crawford is 39-0 and hasn't had a fight go the distance since 2016. Furthermore, his last seven fights have been knockout wins. Meanwhile, Spence Jr. is 28-0 and has become much more of a distance fighter as of late. Three of Spence Jr.'s last four wins have been decisions. However, he comes off a tenth-round knockout of Yordenis Ugás in his most recent fight.
Still over a month away, the fight has gained monumental traction. It's been dubbed a "legacy-defining" fight by several pundits. As to be expected with a fight of this magnitude, there is a bilateral rematch clause. Splitting the first two fights would obviously set up a rubber match to cap off the trilogy. Furthermore, the winner of the trilogy will have the leverage to push for a shot at Jernell Charlo, the undisputed junior middleweight champion.
Crawford Hypes Up Fight, Spence Jr. Promises Punishment
The fight is undeniably the biggest event in the sport since Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2017. However, Crawford thinks its even bigger than that. "It is the biggest fight of the year," the 35-year-old said to TMZ. Furthermore, he added that it could be "the biggest fight in the last 10-plus years!." Despite this, Crawford was confident of a win. "I'm going to win this fight," he told TMZ. "And I'm already the best fighter in the world!"
For his part, Spence Jr. has also addressed the fight in recent days. “I’m trying to really put a hurting on him. So I feel like this is going to be an action-packed fight. I’m trying to put on the best performance of my career. “I know he gonna try to put on the best performance in his career, and everybody is going to want to tune into this fight, especially the older people who talk about, ‘Oh, man, I remember when this guy fought’ or when Ray Leonard fought and how great their fights was'," Spence told Boxing News. The debate will finally be settled on July 29. Showtime has set a price of $84.99 for the pay-per-view event.
