Yesterday afternoon LaMelo Ball became the first high school basketball player to launch his very own signature sneaker, the $395 Big Baller Brand Melo Ball 1.
LaMelo is entering his junior year at Chino Hills High School but has already committed to playing for the UCLA Bruins, just like his older brothers Lonzo and LiAngelo. The 6'2 160-pound point guard, currently the 17th ranked player in the Class of 2019, according to Rivals.com, could run into eligibility issues because of the Melo Ball 1.
According to Yahoo Sports,
“Generally speaking, a college athlete or prospect paid for use of their athletics reputation or ability risks their future eligibility in that sport,” an NCAA source told Yahoo Sports. “This includes profiting from the sale of items bearing the young person’s name. NCAA rules, however, do allow prospects to promote commercial products prior to enrollment provided it is not for pay.”
LaMelo's father, LaVar, doesn't seem at all concerned whether his son is eligible to play ball at UCLA or not. He told ESPN,
"We'll worry about it when we get there," Ball told ESPN. "Who cares? If he can't play, then he can't play. It doesn't mean he'll stop working out and getting better."
"Maybe in two years, they'll change the rule and he'll be able to go to the NBA straight out of high school," LaVar Ball said.
