Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson first appeared in the Fast And The Furious franchise in 2011's Fast Five. Johnson stepped into the role of Luke Hobbs, a DSS agent and bounty hunter assigned to take down Dom Toretto's crew. The character appeared in the next three films in the franchise. Furthermore, he appeared in the spinoff film Hobbs & Shaw. However, The Rock stepped away from the franchise ahead of 2021's F9.
"My little brother Dwayne… the time has come. The world awaits the finale of Fast 10. As you know, my children refer to you as Uncle Dwayne in my house. There is not a holiday that goes by that they and you don’t send well wishes… but the time has come. Legacy awaits. I told you years ago that I was going to fulfill my promise to Pablo. I swore that we would reach and manifest the best Fast in the finale that is 10! I say this out of love… but you must show up, do not leave the franchise idle you have a very important role to play. Hobbs can’t be played by no other. I hope that you rise to the occasion and fulfill your destiny," Vin Diesel wrote on Instagram. However, Johnson wouldn't budge.
The Rock Back For Fast 11
However, fans were surprised to see Johnson return in a post-credits scene at the end of Fast X. Per Polygon, "In the scene, Hobbs follows some sort of law-enforcement lead to an abandoned warehouse-ish space. There, Fast X villain Dante Reyes has set up a bunch of monitors to show Hobbs some clips from past Fast and Furious movies. While Dante has spent the entire movie up until that point torturing Dom Toretto by targeting his Fast family for killing Dante’s dad, Hernan Reyes, in Fast Five, his video clips are a reminder that while Dom and co. took Reyes down, Hobbs actually fired the bullet that killed him."
"[In Fast Five] Reyes had Hobbs’ men killed. When Hobbs shoots Reyes he snarls, “That’s for my team, you sonovabitch.” That’s why, Dante says, Hobbs is up next on the “torment, then kill” revenge list. “Well, I ain’t hard to find, you sumbitch,” Hobbs growls in response." Now, the Rock has confirmed what everyone has been expecting - that he's back in the franchise for its final films. However, the size of his role is yet to be seen.
