Well the chase is over. After 48 hours of a nationwide manhunt, Steve Stephens, the man who senselessly shot a Cleveland retiree and posting the video to Facebook live, took his own life in Pennsylvania on Tuesday.
Pennsylvania police received a tip from a McDonalds worker in Erie, Pennsylvania, approximately 100 miles east of Cleveland, who says Stephens ordered a 20-piece nugget through the drive-thru. The employee ultimately thought she recognized the man and called the police to report it.
However, that’s not where things ended. Stephens took police on a 2-mile police chase from the McDonalds before he lost control and crashed his white Ford Fusion. As the officers approached the vehicle, Steve Stephens decided to take his own life and shoot himself in the head.
"As the vehicle was spinning out of control from the PIT maneuver, Stephens pulled a pistol and shot himself in the head," Pennsylvania State Police said.
"We're grateful that this has ended," Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said. "We would prefer that it had not ended this way because there are a lot of questions, I'm sure, that not only the family but the city in general would have had for Steve."
