From Kendrick Lamar to 21 Savage, here are seven hit records Pharrell produced

Songs produced by Pharrell have a unique four-count start, which became a trademark in his discography. While this is common knowledge in 2023, it was not always the case. There are several videos highlighting it now but this discovery has been explored in the past decade. Since then, his production discography continues to grow as a solo producer and one-half of The Neptunes alongside Chad Hugo.

Pharrell's production gained traction through hip-hop but he has branched into the pop world, too. However, this list is focused on the former. Pharrell’s collaborations always generate buzz and we’ve gathered seven of his most recent ones that generated quite a bit in this list.

7. "Call My Bluff” - Pusha T (2022)

Pharrell produced this song for his longtime friend and collaborator Pusha T for 2022's It’s Almost Dry. Pharrell actually produced half of the album and pushed Push to take inspiration from Joaquin Phoenix's film, Joker. There's no song on the album that embodies the influence of Batman's arch-nemesis than "Call My Bluff." Pharrell lays down a menacing melody that sounds like an organ with subtle screams popping in throughout the whole song. Pusha also does his creepy Joker-esque laugh that appears throughout the album. Though not among Pharrell’s catalog of danceable tracks, he and Pusha create an eerie atmosphere that expounds on their chemistry and range. Pharrell doesn't make any vocal appearances on the song, giving Pusha room to use his voice as an instrument on its own.

6. “Momma I Hit A Lick” - 2 Chainz feat. Kendrick Lamar (2019)

This is another special song in Pharrell’s production discography. It’s the first time 2 Chainz has had Kendrick Lamar featured on his song. The two rappers' chemistry takes center stage at the beginning of the song as they trade bars on the hook. However, it's Pharrell's production that provides room for 2 Chainz and Kendrick to experiment with their flows. The drums Pharrell uses on this one have an aggressive tone to them but the melody of the song is minimal. 2 Chainz patterns his delivery with the percussion, taking a pause after every bar and making each quotable stand out further. At one point, he attempts his own impression of Pharrell. His voice reaches a level so high that it’s uncharacteristic but once again, it helps emphasize his lyrics. Meanwhile, Kendrick sounds energized across his verse, tweaking the pace of his flow throughout his appearance.

5. “Light At First Sight/Advanced” - Kid Cudi feat. Pharrell Williams (2016)

This is technically two songs but Pharrell produced both of them. Pharrell and Kid Cudi are connected through their love and support of the brand BAPE. Also, the space imagery of Pharrell’s Billionaire Boys Club brand overlaps with essentially all the imagery of Cudi’s discography. “Flight At First Sight” has a melody that sounds like stars shimmering in the night sky. Cudi’s sung vocals pair well with some creative drums that sound like metal clinging. There's a shift once listeners get to the “Advanced” portion of the song. The production here has a certain dancey eeriness to it, thanks to the deep bass and spacey keys. Cudi jumps into his rap bag here to match the tonal shift. His signature hums also make an appearance and so do some minimal but effective vocals from Pharrell.

4. “Twilight” - Anderson .Paak (2019)

This is a song Pharrell produced that captures the upbeat, funk-driven side of his production. This time, he uses a horn loop from Terrace Martin and Marcus Paul and a pulsing kick drum for Anderson .Paak's soulful vocals. The subtle keyboard melody keeps the lightness of the song intact. However, the percussion remains the star of the show. Pharrell's trademark skittering, hissing drums and shakers are all over this track while .Paak’s vocals float on with ease. Additionally, Pharrell assists with background vocals on the second verse.

3. “Mr Morale” - Kendrick Lamar feat. Tanna Leone (2022)

This is a unique song Pharrell produced on this list. Though it doesn’t have a clear-cut four-count start, some listeners say Kendrick’s vocal inflections serve as a substitute for Pharrell's trademark. This song ties together the multi-layered subjects from the rest of the album, Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers. However, the message is shared in an aggressive yet upbeat tone throughout Pharrell’s production. A key aspect of this one is the vocal sample which gives the song a grandiose yet foreboding feeling. There’s also an escalating looped melody with drums that bounce just as much as Kendrick's emotionally energetic delivery and flow. Vocals from Tanna Leone and Sam Dew bring a completely different feel than Kendrick does but they fit on Pharrell’s soundscape just as well.

2. “Down in Atlanta” - Pharrell Williams feat. Travis Scott (2022)

This is the second song Pharrell has produced for Travis Scott. Their first was “Flying High”, from Travis’ debut studio album, Rodeo. Pharrell is credited as a producer along with several others on that one. “Down In Atlanta” has an upbeat bounce to it structured through a warping bass, skittering drums, and a groovy synth line melody. Travis’ vocals get some background assistance at points throughout the song, too. Pharrell layers the production by bringing several sounds in and out of the track. Though it wasn't promoted as Travis’ “comeback” single, it certainly built further anticipation for Utopia.

1. “Cash In Cash Out” - Pharrell Williams feat. 21 Savage and Tyler, The Creator (2022)

This is one of Pharrell’s most recently produced songs. It’s also one of his most creative and surprising collaborations. While his relationship with Tyler, The Creator is well documented, his decision to pair the Odd Future founder with 21 Savage came as a pleasant surprise. Tyler’s animated and boastful verses contrast with 21’s near-monotone hook, making the song an immediate stand-out in Pharrell's expansive catalog.
