Earlier today, Don Lemon was let go from CNN after 17 years on the air. Overall, this wasn't a huge surprise to some people. Mostly, this is due to the fact that Lemon had been suspended just a few months ago. Furthermore, reports alleged that Lemon had threatened some co-workers through text. Needless to say, the writing was on the wall. However, as Lemon alleges, CNN never gave him the slightest indication that he would be let go. In the statement below, you can see just how upset he is.
“I was informed this morning by my agent that I have been terminated by CNN. I am stunned. After 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly,” Don Lemon wrote. “At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play. With that said, I want to thank my colleagues and the many teams I have worked with for an incredible run. They are the most talented journalists in the business, and I wish them all the best.”
CNN Clears The Air (No Pun Intended)
In the tweet above, however, CNN immediately offered a response. "Don Lemon’s statement about this morning’s events is inaccurate," the network claimed. "He was offered an opportunity to meet with management but instead released a statement on Twitter." Overall, this wasn't even the biggest firing of the entire day. Just minutes earlier, it was revealed that Tucker Carlson was out at Fox News. If anything, that was the biggest surprise of all considering how it is the most-watched news commentary show in the entire United States.
Either way, the fallout from this decision will be interesting to watch. There is no telling what avenues Lemon will pursue now that he is without employment.
