"DEADSTAR" opens with a bang (bang).

Chief Keef's influence on the new generation of rappers is undeniable. While it at first seemed as if Sosa ay not get the credit he deserved with birthing a whole new style, his students are showing him love in the way of collaboration. We saw Carti and Keef together on The Cozy Tapes Vol. 2, Uzi and Keef working together in a few Instagram snippets, and now, Smokepurrp and Keef on the opening track from the former's debut album DEADSTAR. The abrasive track finds the overlap between their two styles, while also making room for Yo Gotti, whose presence works due to his proximity to the early Memphis rap that's also informed Purpp's sound.

After a year-long break, Keef has released three projects this year: the straight-ahead Two Zero One Seven, largely produced by Lex Luger, the R&B-informed Thot Breaker, and this months's The W.

We recently spoke to Purpp about the project, which he said was a chance for him to try out some new things. “On this project, I tried a lot of new different things and sounds," he said. "Deadstar has no boundaries. I tried touching any sound I can touch, and I really don’t care how people feel about it cause I myself feel like I am the tape. The tape is really me. A ‘DEADSTAR’ is a black hole, and it was kinda how I was feeling at the moment...I made it over a few months, and I finished it a little awhile ago, and I've just been adding and switching songs and stuff."

Other guests on the project include the rapper's closest collaborator Lil Pump, Virginia singer and rapper D.R.A.M., as well as another Memphis legend Juicy J. The full project is available to stream across major streaming services, including of course, Purpp's preferred platform, SoundCloud.

Quotable Lyrics:
I'm such a player with a bow tie
Phone with me for the long ride
Pull up on me like roadside
Very scary like Poltergeist
48 what I'm gon' smoke tonight
They like, "Chief, sir, could you lower the price?"
