I'm sure many people were just as surprised when Victor Oladipo said he wanted to make a move into music. Typically when athletes try to do that, especially in basketball, it doesn't really turn out the way they want it to. Many assumed he'd probably drop bars if he did. However, after dropping his cover of Donnie Hathaway's "Song For You", people didn't expect that the Indiana Pacer's guard to have some singing chops but lo and behold, he does. Less than a month after releasing his cover, he returns with "Rope A Dope" featuring 2 Chainz.
Victor Oladipo and 2 Chainz address Donald Trump's recent comments about athletes on "Rope A Dope". The single features both Victor and 2 Chainz not only addressing Trump's comments, but the bigger picture behind it. The two of them come through with a track that's meant to motivate people to stand up against the injustices that have been happening in the United States. The song really focuses on the power of unity and what humanity could accomplish if everyone comes together.
Victor uses the concept of "rope a dope" as a means of addressing being a minority in the US. While racial inequality in the United States has been evident throughout history and recent conflicts, Oladipo uses the boxing move as a metaphor of being strong through it all. On the hook he sings "Wave your flags, you don't want no smoke/ Everything you got still won't come close/ I came into this world with my back against the ropes/ So watch us footwork, it's the rope a dope."
This month alone, Oladipo has dropped two singles to kick off his career as a musician. However, the basketball player/singer is gearing up to drop his first EP on October 6th titled, Songs For You. Be sure you keep your eyes peeled for that drop.
