The Cowboys are changing things up.

Ezekiel Elliott was one of the best players on the Dallas Cowboys for a few years. However, just like many running backs, he hit his peak very early on in his career. Overall, being a running back is extremely difficult. Your body is constantly taking punishment, and it is ultimately the reason why RBs find themselves out of the league at an early age. That said, Elliott has still shown some flashes of brilliance over the last few years. It is ultimately why the Cowboys have kept him in Dallas for so long.

This past season, however, it became very clear that Tony Pollard was their number-one option. Elliott struggled to get yards at times, and in the postseason, he was not what the Cowboys needed. Now, free agency is finally here which means teams can make big decisions in regard to their personnel. Today, it seems like the Cowboys did just that with Elliott. According to Clarence Hill Jr., the Cowboys are planning to release him. Consequently, the team will free up some cap space.

Furthermore, this just cements Pollard as their number one option, moving forward. It should be very interesting to see how all of this ends up shaking out for the team. Moreover, it will also be new territory for Elliott, who has never been in this position before. He will now get to go to a new team, where he will presumably be their backup running back. There is no telling what the market will be for him, however, there has to be at least one team willing to sign him. If not, it would definitely be sad to see.

At this point in time, we are going through a quarterbacks and wide receivers era. Running games do not matter to a lot of teams these days, which has devalued running backs. This is something that guys like Elliott knows all too well. Whether or not the game will change back to how it used to be, remains to be seen.
