The biggest night in film unfolded last night (March 12), and while the Dolby Theatre was mostly filled with popular actors and actresses hoping for awards, some of our favourites from the music industry were in attendance as well. Among them was Rihanna, who gave her second performance of the year during the Oscars ceremony. The soon-to-be mother of two earned her first Academy Award nomination for her work on "Lift Me Up" from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever alongside Tems and Ryan Coogler.
Late last year, the Nigerian songstress spoke about her experience co-writing with the Fenty founder, the Marvel director, and Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson. "After speaking with Ryan [Coogler] and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life," she shared. "I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them."
Tems' First Oscar Nomination
Tems also named Rihanna as one of her inspirations, noting that "hearing her convey this song is a great honour." Though the 35-year-old captivated audiences at the show and at home with her vocals, "Lift Me Up" ultimately lost out to "Naatu Naatu" from RRR. The latter made history last night by becoming the first-ever Indian film song to win an Oscar.
The "Free Mind" hitmaker may not be making headlines for taking home her first Academy Award, but her incredible (and to some, offensive) gown is certainly causing a stir online. Tems was glowing in her Lever S/S 2023 couture look, which elegantly floated around her body like a cloud. Unfortunately, the large shoulder that wrapped around her head caused a few problems when she sat down inside.
Twitter Reacts to the Singer's Stunning Dress
At various points throughout the evening, those seated behind the rising starlet were seen attempting to catch a glimpse of the stage beyond her exuberant gown. A debate has since launched on social media, with users debating whether Tems' outfit is "rude," and if those calling her out for it are racist. "Tems dress was beautiful, Tems is drop-dead gorgeous, Tems is my star girl and all that," one person began. "Tems blocking people’s views with her dress was inconsiderate. People pointing that out is not racism as long as they aren’t using derogatory language. Humans need to be more honest."
Others obviously feel the opposite. "Tems is in her first racially motivated Hollywood drama. Yeah, she’s doing very well," someone else quipped. Elsewhere, another pointed out, "Someone wore a duvet to an event a few days ago but Tems’ dress is where you all draw the line. Nonsense."
