Here's what to expect with this controversial new update.

From Instagram Reels to Youtube Shorts, social media platforms have taken to enacting their own variation of attention-grabbing video feeds since the rise of TikTok. Joining the trend is Spotify, which announced a way for music streamers to still get their fix of short videos. Shifting away from its normal feed of album covers, the streaming service is now jumping into a new design that will allow members to discover and interact with content across the app.

With Spotify's push to include more podcasts and audiobooks in recent years, it comes as no surprise that the app has been seeking to expand its interface. In fact, CEO Daniel Ek spoke with The Verge in 2021 about his goal of seeing more "audio creators" on the app. Correspondingly, this redesigned home screen will now host a variety of different content, from a short clip of a video podcast to an informative post about music. As a whole, this new style of Spotify will present itself as a scrollable reel on the app's homepage.

Spotify Announces App Update With Short Reels

Since its conception in 2006, Spotify has remained a simple and easy-to-use interface. The announcement of the drastic shift in the music platform was disclosed on March 8th during the Stream On event. After the news circulated on Twitter of this reel-like feature, users projected their conflicting views. Some shared excitement, with one user reflecting how it's "a great idea." Another user added in, "this is actually so good, i find it hard to search for new music that i would like so it will help me so much."

While those who are pro-update note how the redesign is a great step towards making music discovery simpler, not everyone is so pleased with the upcoming changes to Spotify. One user jokingly noted, "deleting Spotfiy and switching to Pandora." Another shared their distaste for the TikTok-esque feature, tweeting "I hate how every app is becoming the same nowadays omg. Shorts be ruining our attention span." What do you think about Spotify's new update? Let us know in the comments below. As always, keep in touch with HNHH for more news on hip-hop and pop culture.
