While the MTV Movie Awards have never been a powerhouse of prestige for actors or movie studios, it remains one of the more fun award shows around purely because it doesn’t take itself as seriously as the others. Probably because of that unseriousness, the show has decided to rebrand itself as the MTV Movie & TV Awards, bringing television into the fold.
The awards show has been around for a surprisingly long time – this May will mark its 26th show. The newly rebranded show will ad seven new categories for its TV shows. According to MTV president Chris McCarthy the reason for the switch is that, “we’re living in a golden age of content, and great storytelling and characters resonate regardless of whether you’re watching it in a theater or on TV. The new MTV Movie & TV Awards will celebrate even more of the brightest, bravest funniest and most shared films and TV shows resonating across youth culture.”
This year’s show will air on May 7. The host and performers are still being determined. Last year Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart held it down as co-hosts, which will be hard to top.
