VH1 was among the first network to put together a hip hop-themed historical drama with its film The Breaks. Its success and that of other shows like BET’s The New Edition Story and Netflix’s The Get Down has prompted VH1 to turn The Breaks into a TV series. They just dropped the first trailer for the show, and it has some familiar faces in it.
The movie picks up where the movie left off, hopefully answering some of the questions the cliffhanger left us with. Main characters Mack Wilds, Antoine Harris and Wood Harris all return to reprise their roles. Things will only get deeper as the show enters the hip hop explosion of the early 1990s and all the money that followed.
VH1 has also added a bunch of recognizable faces in hip hop to the cast. T.I. plays a lawyer and Teyana Taylor plays an up-and-coming rapper, while Method Man and Afro also return to the fold.
The Breaks TV series begins next Monday, February 20 at 9pm EST. Did y’all watch the movie and is this a worthy follow up?
