The overall sound of West Coast hip hop over the past couple decades has been a point of debate amongst hip hop heads since the release of Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city. One of the most integral faces for the history of the Left Coast’s music, and rap in general, is Ice Cube. Obviously, he has become a brand and is involved in much more than just rapping, but the classic L.A. rapper is back with a new album, and recently talked about his choice to not use many features, and even chimed in on Kendrick Lamar.
Talking about his upcoming LP Everythang’s Corrupt, the former NWA member tells HHDX he likes to keep guest spots minimal on his albums, “When I go to do a record, the last thing I’m thinking about is who else I can work on it with. I really think I’m a throwback when it comes to that. Cube adds, “I don’t really like doing these compilation-type records, I don’t really like hearing them either.”
On GKMC Kendrick gives an ode to one of Ice Cube’s most classic track’s “A Bird In The Hand” when he raps his opening line on the second stanza of “M.A.A.D. City”, and the OG rapper has respect for K.Dot. “It’s great for true artists who are not people who are chasing the charts or worried about who’s on the [charts]. You can respect an artist like that,” the Death Certificate rapper adds, “When true talent steps on the scene, it should be rewarded, whether it’s deep music that grips your soul or it’s just booty-shaking music.”
Ice Cube dropped visuals for the title track off his Everythang’s Corrupt album, and you can check it out below.
