Key! has been working his ass off over the past few years between his endeavors with Two-9 collective and his own solo music. Earlier this year, the group released their debut studio album FRVR. As a solo artist, he's been pumping out singles, mixtapes and EP's over the past few years including his R&B inspired project Christian Rose he dropped three months back. The rapper has also been repping A$AP Mob's AWGE brand. He made several appearance on Cozy Tapes Vol 2 and was featured on Cozy Tapes Vol. 1's stand-out track "Crazy Brazy." Today, he gets much more personal with his latest single "grown key."
Off the top of the song, Key! starts the song from a vulnerable place saying, "My first baby momma was pregnant with my first son, Blake. Rest in peace. He choked on his umbilical cord. I got his name tatted on my face." It sets the tone for the rest of the song. While he uses the song as a confessional, he talks about multiple aspects of his pasts and the impact it has on him as a person today.
Key! puts a twist on the typical trap sound with this song. He has melodic ad-libs in the back that he stretches out. The ad-libs contrast with his vocals on the track, as he kind of mumbles throughout the majority of it. Towards the end of the song, he starts begins to enunciate his words through his auto-tune laced singing. The way he plays with his vocals throughout the track is bound to put you in a zone.
Key! really strikes a chord with this song. While many may be used to some of his more turnt up tunes, he shows another side of himself with this song. It's a strong effort from the Atlanta rapper.
Quotable Lyrics
My first son,
Rest In Peace,
My second son,
He look just like me
