It's no secret that Chief Keef is the biggest influence on the new wave of "SoundCloud Rap" that has hinted at hip-hop's future over the last year. One of Sosa's students is Atlanta's Playboi Carti, whose self-titled mixtape borrowed vocal ideas from Keef and repurposed them to create a thrilling new sound. That style can also be credited to producer Pi'erre Bourne, who worked on much of the album including breakthrough singles "Magnolia" and "*wokeuplikethis." Both Carti and Pi'erre are present on A$AP Mob's "Blowin Minds (Skateboard)," as is Chief Keef, who supplies the catchy slurred hook. From there, he passes the baton to Rocly, Nast, Ant, and of course, Carti. The production is very much in line with Carti's latest project, as a flute-like sound dances atop steady drums. The result is a song that sounds distinctly 2017, but also nods to its past influences, giving Keef his due credit while also showcasing how far the sound can be taken.
The track comes off the newly released Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy. The follow-up to 2016's Cozy Tapes, the project continues in the tradition of the first installment of bringing the mob together while also incorporating a large number of outside voices. Gucci Mane, KEY!, Big Sean, Jaden Smith, and Zack are a few of the affiliates who come through on the album. The concept of The Cozy Tapes was originally envisioned by the late ASAP Yams, with the mob releasing the projects in his honor. Vol. 2 follows the release of A$AP Ferg's Still Striving mixtape released last week. Like the Cozy Tapes, it's a highly collaborative project, sporting more features than songs. Cozy Tapes Vol. 2 is available to stream across all major platforms. You can check it out here.
Quotable Lyrics:
All new watch, that bitch blow minds
When we show up, you know it's showtime
I don't skateboard, but I'm on my grind
Hundred thousand, all hundreds
It'll blow a bitch mind
When I was in the jungle we was blowin' 9s
Just hit a nigga bitch for the second time
And you know I gotta cross the finish line
You can't stand me bitch? Sit it down
Blowin' Minds (Skateboard)
