It's crazy to think that we would reach a point where Lil Uzi Vert would be collaborating with one of the biggest artists in the world, but here we are. The ubiquity of "XO Tour Life" helped elevate the young rapper's plateau, allowing him to announce a surprise drop of Luv Is Rage 2 with considerable hype in tow. Ultimately, Uzi's rockstar persona and original variant on hip-hop played a large role in bringing him to a point where his album could compete with the likes of the established and respected A$AP Mob. Now, with his new album in the process of being digested by thousands, comes one of Uzi's most high profile collaborations yet.
It goes without saying that The Weeknd has all but dominated the "rnb" scene, though I'd be hard pressed to describe Abel's magic as "rnb." In reality, his haunting blend of ominous production and wistful romance have managed to pioneer a subgenre, which in turn influenced an entire generation of young artists. There are certainly elements of said production on "UnFazed," with reverse delay swells and a melancholic piano arpeggio, but the track's vibe is more hedonistic than reflective.
The themes are further emphasized by the-in-your-face percussion, over which both artists indulge in some serious braggadocio. They have been finding new ways to steal your girls for years, so why would they stop now? The reality is, both artists have probably stolen their fair share over the past few years, so why not brag a little? Neither one completely reinvent themselves with new and innovative flows, but their presence and charisma is enough to bring this to the next level.
While "UnFazed" isn't the definitive performance that say, Drake and Weeknd's "Crew Love" was, it's a get-hype, enjoyable cut on a generally solid project.
