Vancouver producer Ekali has teamed with Carol City, Florida's Denzel Curry for a record that finds overlap in their styles while never compromising what they do best. "Babylon" begins with a gigantically colorful synth riff before building to a more rhythmic, synth-brass punctuated groove. Always a highly technical and highly energetic rapper, it's hardly a challenge for Denzel, who brings the perfect energy to the track, later turning down his delivery when things get more haunting and moody.
"My objective with Babylon was to create a world where rap and electronic coexisted without tipping the scales too far in either direction," Babylon writes on SoundCloud. "I was hyped on the idea of producing an entire song AROUND Denzel's story instead of having him tell his story around my beat, so I ended up producing 99% of the song after Zel had already recorded his parts. It's an approach to rap music that I'd never seen done before, so I wanted to know what that sounded like. Working in the room with Denzel was fast... he's a real rapper. Most of the time we spent kicking it just playing shit back and forth. He wrote and recorded his parts for Babylon in minutes."
Babylon previously remixed Denzel's fan favorite "Threatz," as well as Vince Staples' "Smoke & Retribution." He was announced as OWSLA's latest member earlier this month.
As for Curry, he just released a new single called "Skywalker," which comes in advance of his upcoming album Taboo. Earlier this year, he released the 13 EP, which he put out simply to ensure his fans were satisfied. “The reason why I put out the 13 EP is because I got bored. I wanted to supply my fans with something,” Denzel explained. “I knew I couldn’t give them the stuff from the album. The album’s not even done yet. It’s almost done, but it’s not done yet, and I want to make sure it’s perfect to a tee before I even think about releasing anything.”
Quotable Lyrics:
It is the ultimate Myrmidon
From the land, which is the city of Babylon
Dress up my hands, don't confuse me for cinema
I'm one of a kind, as I grow like a Digimon
When I'm evolvin', not many books
Many revolvers, no problem solvin'
Illegal tendencies, infinite symphonies
Illustrate misery, livin' on infamy
Babylon
