Saint Cassius already has a Grammy to his name (he cowrote Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are") and holds publishing on tracks from J. Cole, Fabolous, and Lupe Fiasco, but he's now working on building a solo career. "Take A Knee" is his debut single, which according to Cassius was conceived of at the Thanksgiving table and is inspired by none other than Colin Kaepernick, whose protest has inspired many across the country. At one point, he addresses the police brutality that seen unarmed black men unjustly killed and cops free of accountability. "If we get stopped by some cops," he raps. "Well it's a miracle if we ain't shot / They puttin' holes through our people
Like cheerios / I mean the killing seem serial / But by the grace of God / We're still here, so here we go." As a rapper, he's captivating and confident, at times sounding reminiscent of J. Cole, another rapper who often puts focus on the socially conscious side of the artform. Look out for big things from Saint Cassius in the future.
Quotable Lyrics:
If we get stopped by some cops
Well it's a miracle if we ain't shot
They puttin' holes through our people
Like cheerios
I mean the killing seem serial
But by the grace of God
We're still here, so here we go
Take A Knee
