Matter

After sharing the house-infused "Pride" in January, rising Chicago rapper Mari has followed up the promising single with "Matter," a self-produced new track. It's another genre-pushing endeavor, as he takes on gorgeously filtered vocal samples and colorful, ascendant xylophone riffs. The subtly danceable track is pulled together by Mari's dynamic vocal performance, which is doubled and pitched up at times and slips into bluesy melodies at others. All the while, he's working in some deceptively multi-syllabic rhymes ("Half of this is hazardous / I package then I'm passing it / Surpass the fucking average / So imagine it in high.")

"We literally stars," Mari repeats in closing, coming back to the physical theme presented in the title. With this performance, he makes a case figuratively as well.
