SZA's CTRL features a lot of raw, stripped-down R&B, but it also contains some gloss. "Prom," one of the project's immediate highlights, is a shimmering pop gem that feels slightly out-of-step with the rest of the album, amping up the tempo and keeping a tight, pop-influenced structure. SZA provides her own call-and-response vocals on the hook, making for a powerfully catchy chorus that you can't wait to return.
CTRL was released last Friday through TDE and RCA after experiencing delays. It features guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, James Fauntleroy, and Isaiah Rashad. Listen to it here.
Quotable Lyrics:
Forget to call your mama on the weekend
You should put yourself in timeout
Shame, shame on you
But lately you've been feelin' so good
I forget my future, never pull out
Shame, shame on me
Baby the money'll make it easier for me
To run and hide out somewhere
