Indianapolis' Mathaius Young is as much a producer as he is a rapper, but on "Raw," his new collaboration with Delaware's Lil West, he's outsourced the production for a new trap "experiment."
"I don’t wanna be an artist who covers one genre and really I was just having fun," he tells HipHopDX. "I didn’t pick one sound and stick with it." This versatility and open-minded approach can be heard throughout Young's 2016 mixtape Pilot, as well as his many loose tracks released in the interim.
With beat duties being handled by K. Stacks, Young is able to focus solely on vocal performance. His lines hit with a casual precision, with some deceptively clever punchlines sprinkled throughout. Meanwhile, his collaborator Lil West provides a more animated contrast. Mathaius' album Take The Night Away is expected to arrive later this year.
Quotable Lyrics:
For that pop shit I ain't in sync
Boy bands, you got boy bands
If you're talking to me 'bout some work
I need that shit right in advance
Probably missed a lot for this
My n*gga took a chance
Raw
