The Compton rapper known as Buddy, signed to Pharrell's i am OTHER label, has scored some big-time feature placements over the past year, most recently guesting on the Cozy Tapes standout "Way Hii" (with A$AP Rocky, Wiz Khalifa, and BJ The Chicago Kid). He's also featured on Nipsey Hussle's "Status Symbol 2," BJ The Chicago Kid's "Man Down," and Asher Roth's "Rap Hands," to name a few. He's now ready to prove himself as a lead artist. Today, it has been revealed that Buddy's debut project will arrive in early 2017, and with the announcement comes the first single off the upcoming release: "Shine." The track was premiered on Beats 1 radio as part of a segment put together by Carl Chery called The Cosign.
Buddy's sound is clearly indebted to classic West Coast hip-hop, especially on "Shine," but his singing chops are what make him stand out from the competitive L.A. new school. The record is about Buddy's inability to let the perils of his neighborhood drag him down. With a flow this fresh, he can't help but "Shine." Cop the new single on iTunes.
Quotable Lyrics
Drivin' through the fog with my high beams
Puttin' on my Visine
Let me tell you just what I seen
Angels fallin' from the sky
I just hope that they can take me
