Just when you thought fast food couldn’t get any stranger, it does. Almost like a mutating personification of what it does to our bodies, Taco Bell has brought something to the table that could only come out of a weed-induced haze: a chalupa that uses fried chicken instead of a shell. Taco Bell is calling this monstrosity the Naked Chicken Chalupa, which sounds hilariously healthy for what it actually is.
Keep in mind this is the same fast food chain that brought you a taco wrapped in a giant Doritos chip. Taco Bell President Brian Niccol told Bloomberg that the new product was not inspired from ingesting too much weed, but was actually a byproduct of research showing that, “fried chicken is growing at a tremendous clip.” Nicole explained, “It’s a real void in our menu, and it’s something that our customers ask us for.” Why someone would go to Taco Bell and ask for fried chicken doesn’t make much sense to this writer, but to each their own.
Per a report from the National Chicken Council (yes, that’s a thing), Americans are expected to eat roughly 91.7 pounds of chicken per person in 2017, which would be a record. The only comparable chicken-related dish to the Naked Chicken is KFC’s Double Down, which used two pieces of fried chicken as the “buns” to a bacon and cheese sandwich.
The Naked Chicken Chalupa rolls out to Taco Bells everywhere on January 26 for only $2.99. Will you be getting it?
