Though the Harambe craze has died down since he was killed by his captors last year, there are still those who are willing to pay top dollar for memorabilia inspired by the Cincinnati-based gorilla. A Flamin' Hot Cheeto that is miraculously shaped like the famous ape recently went up for auction on eBay. The closing bid? A whopping $99,000.
"I opened up a bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos and as soon as I looked inside I came across this unique Cheeto that looks like Harambe the gorilla," read the description of the sale. “This item up for bid is only for this unique Cheeto, bag not included. This makes a great collectible for anyone who appreciates rare items.”'
Rare indeed. This particular Cheeto looks like a few Cheetos melded together, but taken as one morsel, it resembles Harambe engaged in one of his favorite pastimes of making his way up a slender tree.
The original bid was for $11.99, though the bidder -- Chris from Burbank, CA -- clearly underestimated the online fervor surrounding the slain gorilla.
Still, Chris still thought he could achieve a selling price in the low thousands, reports TMZ, which may surprise those unfamiliar with the legend of Harambe. It should be noted that eBay is still in the process of contacting the person who made the winning bid. However, if the $99,000 sale falls through, Chris was reportedly offered several bids of over $90,000.
If he does cash out, Chris plans to split his profits with the coworker who suggested he put the phenomenal snack item on eBay in the first place. He has also avowed to make a donation to an animal charity, in Harambe's name of course. In the meantime, he's keeping the six-figure spicy Cheeto in a safe place.
There's one way that the value of this one-of-a-kind treat could depreciate, and that's if Frito-Lay decides to alter the shape of their Cheetos in order to sell limited edition bags full of Harambe-shaped Flamin' Hots. Sounds delicious.
