People often forget that free speech only applies to the government. That was probably the case for Michigan firefighter Ryan Hudson, who was fired from his job after posting a hate-filled, pro-slavery comment in response to a woman’s “Black Lives Matter” comment under a post about Colin Kaepernick on Facebook.
Facebook is frequently the place where people go to vent their frustrations, and this was no different for Hudson. After seeing a woman’s comment that simply read “Black Lives Matter,” he responded: Fuck Black Lives Matter. You are the epitome of a nigger. All lives matter. And if you think it’s just black lives, kiss my ass bitch and go back to the fields that us in the north fought to free you from.” So much for northern liberals.
Fire Department chief Greg Moore fired Hudson after he saw the post, and his reason for the firing is based in logic rather than morality. The department chief explained that he could no longer trust Hudson, who had only worked there for a year, to treat everyone equally while doing his life-saving work as a firefighter. “We don’t know it would have changed him from doing his job,” explained Moore. “But what are you going to do? We can’t take the chance. WE have to treat everybody [the same] no matter what we want to happen.”
Hudson initially claimed his phone was hacked, but has changed tactics and now maintains he made the post when he was drunk. That probably won’t get him his job back.
