On March's Won't Find Love in the Hills EP, Amir Obe confidently honed in on a late-night, love-drunk sound. His melodic flows are familiar, though his all-out confessions are startling and refreshing. The Detroit rapper/singer is now back with a new track, "No Peace," his first release since the EP, aside from guesting on Stwo's "Fill the Void" last month. The new song is produced by NYLZ, a frequent collaborator of Obe's.
Obe tells FADER that the song is about "a woman pulling me into her depths and unknowingly drowning me in the process." "This is an expression of my suffocation," he says. Repeatedly singing, "Let them bodies hit the floor," the sonics are still much smoother than the Drowning Pool lyric would suggest. About halfway through the track, the production suddenly takes a turn in the reggae direction, as if Obe is finally swimming upward toward the sunlight.
Quotable Lyrics
If I'm sober then it's over, say it's done now
Play it smarter, I'm a martyr, I'll go dumb now
I'm still open, I'm just hopin' you ain't shut down
I can see it so when I'm lookin' in your eye
Tryna feel alive, but you killin' all the vibe
