The return of Nipsey Hussle has been one of the most enjoyable developments of 2016. His album, whenever it arrives, is sounding like it'll be scary good. Today, he's back with his fifth new record in the past month, "I Do This." It's also his second recent collab with Young Thug, following "Thug Life." They're proving to be an unexpectedly powerful pair. "I Do This" also features one of California's most promising young rappers in Sacramento's Mozzy. The track is produced by Mike Free, and it begins with an intro from one of Nipsey's affiliates, Sinister Pook.
Though Nipsey is a gangsta rapper through and through, he's recently been showing his softer, more vulnerable side, and that continues on "I Do This." Both Nipsey and Mozzy relay the pressures of being one of the few to make it out of their home neighborhoods and how each day is a new fight to put on for those still confined to the struggle. Young Thug's hook is manic, painful, and ultimately beautiful. To finish the track, he drops off a frenzied burst of inspiration that has got to be one of the more inventive flows of his career. What a record.
Quotable Lyrics
A lot of n*ggas lost on this road
A couple n*ggas gave up they goal
Gang a n*ggas traded they soul
But me I'm standin' on tiptoes
Lookin' out my Benz window
Wonderin' where my friends all go
