Young Brooklyn emcee Stro has been steadily building his fanbase this year by dropping his Best By Far mixtape as well as a couple of new songs, including his remix of Kanye West's "Real Friends," which was loved on the site -- perhaps to the point that Ye's people had it taken down. He's back now with a special track dedicated to his moms, arriving just in time for Mother's Day.
"Happy Motha's Day" is a deeply personal, inspiring ode to the woman who helped keep Stro out of the streets and who always put food on his plate, even when that meant there was none on hers. After offering his sincere thanks to his own mother, Stro addresses the youth coming up behind him and instructs them to respect the women in their own lives. It's a powerful track that prompts the listener to look back at his or her own adolescence in the same way that Stro does. All the emotion becomes more fully realized thanks to the nostalgic, old-school production from Dustjam. Bless all the mothers out there.
Quotable Lyrics
And I was always tryna be a man for you
Notebooks in my bedroom, sketchin' up a plan for you
And I'm thinkin' about now, man, I like who I'm becomin'
Your strength compensated for my father runnin'
