Chicago-bred rapper-producer Mari introduced himself in 2015 with his retro summer jam "The Dilemma" and his ambitious four-movement opus "Symphony No. 40." Today is Mari's 24th birthday, and he celebrates by releasing "Simple Things," a flip of the classic Kanye West joint "Hey Mama."
"In this song, I remind folks to appreciate the simple things in life but to also understand that life itself is not so simple," Mari told HNHH. "I'm trying to figure it out just like everyone else."
In "Simple Things," Mari raps about his determination to support his mother through his music. It's an ode to his mama that would make Kanye proud.
"Shouts to Kanye for encouraging me to believe and spark change," Mari said. "It's now my time to blossom and start paying it forward."
Quotable Lyrics
What's gonna happen when Obama not president?
Or when my mama gets kicked out her residence?
Foreclosure, homeless, no sir
Even if it means I gotta serve that work
