Yesterday was the first day of 2016, and it also happened to be the 16th anniversary of D'Angelo's "Untitled," certainly one of the best R&B singles of the past 16 years, perhaps of all time. To honor the occasion, BJ the Chicago Kid has released a mini-mix during which he sings over top of three D'Angelo classics, finishing with "Untitled."
He begins by adding some vocals to D'Angelo's 1997 cover of Prince's "Always in My Hair" before segueing into two tracks off his 2000 album Voodoo: "Send It On" and, the grand finale, "Untitled."
"I had to celebrate his genius by paying homage to his legacy while he continues to kill the game and make great music. It's a new year and there's no better way to start it off than taking it back to where it all began for me. This is real Soul/R&B," BJ said of the tribute. It's an impressive show of respect from one of the soul legend's most talented young disciples.
