Tonight was one of the more low-key episodes of OVO Sound Radio we've heard thus far. There were great mixes from Oliver El-Khatib, Toronto-via-Paris producer Stwo, and Future the Prince, Drake's DJ, but there weren't any huge premieres from Drake, PartyNextDoor, or anyone on that level. However, Stwo dropped a brand new record, "Tales," from buzzing Toronto rapper Jazz Cartier, who made a lot of noise with his last mixtape, Marauding in Paradise.
Cartier returned last week with a banger, "Stick & Move," and "Tales" is another strong release worthy of an OVO premiere. The track starts off quietly, but Cartier is able to maintain fearsome control with his rapping right off the bat, and things only get more exciting as the ominous trap beat slowly picks up behind him. It's unclear who produced the track, though it very well could be Stwo, whom El-Khatib said is being mentored by Noah "40" Shebib.
Where does Cartier fit into the Toronto scene?
Quotable Lyrics
You tellin' too many tales, too many tales
That sh*t is getting so old, your story is getting so stale
N*ggas put pennies in wells, but they never wishin' you well
And n*ggas never in church, but somehow they pray that you fail
