The hip-hop public has taken up a fascination with UK grime emcee Skepta, largely due to his friendship with Drake, so hopefully it's only a matter of time until they catch up with the Godfather, Wiley. The Boy Better Know co-founder has had a big year, releasing an EP, #8, full of gems, including "Cypress Hill," featuring Flowdan and Scratchy, two other riddim crushers. He also recently hooked up with the reclusive masked producer Zomby for a throwback darkroom banger, "Step 2001." His latest, "Standby," bears a similar rhythm to Skepta's "Shutdown," and it has the potential to go off in the States as the public warms up to the UK sound.
Wiley attacks the electro-tinged rigid riddim with the utmost vigor, rattling off bars without taking a breath -- as he always does. Not here to start a hip-hop vs. grime debate -- we've got more than enough talent on our shores -- but can anyone match Wiley's energy on the mic?
Quotable Lyrics
They know, with bars I'm always on standby
If it's on right now then I'm ready
I got all my dons they're on standby
When we roll out we roll heavy
