For the past month or so, Chicago soul trapper Tree has been dropping a freestyle (or "Treestyle") per week, and it's about that time again. This one's called "Well" and it was produced by Playa Haze.
It opens with a scratchy sample of some children singing in a foreign language, with Tree's gruff voice contrasting with theirs. A minimal beat kicks in, acting more as a metronome than anything else, with the focus clearly on the interplay between the MC and the sample. Tree's used these freestyles to experiment with a number of different delivery styles, and this one seems to be working for him better than most.
