Mavado may be the first dancehall artist to cross over to a North American audience in some time. That's DJ Khaled's plan at least, pairing the Jamaican vocalist with some hip hop collaborators on "I Ain't Going Back Broke". Mavado is joined by fellow We The Best artist Ace Hood, as well as Future, who makes sense as a collaborator, seeing that dancehall predated rap's auto-tune obsession by at least a couple years.
The song is pretty much built off of that overlap between dancehall and hip hop, as young Fewtch and Mavado trade syrupy melodies over a triumphant beat. If you're looking for more recent work from the Kingston star, check out his excellent collaboration with Nicki Minaj, "Give It All To Me", from Khaled's last album here.
Quotable Lyrics:
Ain't interested in new friends
Copped my mama that Benz
No, my daughter don't want for nothing
'Cause daddy making them ends
I ain't going back
