North Carolina spitter WELL$ has dubbed this past week the #WEEKOFWELL$, dropping a new song "" as well as a video for "Black Swan." Now he's blessed our Thursday with a track that might just top the rest of his week: "'98 Juvie."
A remarkably accurate tribute to Cash Money rapper Juvenile (right down to the artwork), "'98 Juvie" finds WELL$ adopting a similar sonic aesthetic to the New Orleans rapper's template of chintzy strings and bounce-influenced beats. All the while, WELL$ raps viciously over Sipho The Gift's expertly-composed beat, alternating between double time and a more relaxed cadence.
WELL$ is great, whether he's creating new civil rights anthems or just paying tribute to one of his favorite artists, and he's finally starting to get the shine he deserves.
Quotable Lyrics:
And I done heard it all
In '98 Juvie taught a nigga how to ball
Stretch 'Lac on dubs when a nigga wanna crawl
Trap house I'll dance on you niggas never gettin' calls
