Common is gearing up for the release of his Chiraq-themed album Nobody's Smiling, and today we've got another leak from it. "Speak My Piece" flips a Biggie line from "Hypnotize" ("So I just speak my piece, keep my peace") for its chorus, and like the rest of the album, was produced by No I.D.
With the Biggie line and the single artwork obviously pointing to the triple entendre of piece (something one speaks) vs. piece (a gun) vs. peace, an Andre 3000 line from "Return Of The G" also comes to mind:
"Peace this, peace that, you know what I'm saying but
Every time I uh try to get a peace of mind
Niggas try to get a piece of mine
So I gotta grab my piece"
Common's conscious of the origins of his wordplay, and it makes this track all the more awesome.
Quotable Lyrics:
Ye that's my nigga from back in the day
All that woopty wah woo, man fuck what they say
Play the Lotto for my Gram with a bottle in hand
Lay it down for the world, for Chicago I stand
