Every college has those weird, inexplicable courses. For every Chemistry 101, there’s an Alien Abduction Stories course. We can’t speak on whether or not those off-kilter classes are good, but Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia, has by far the best ‘weird’ course we’ve seen: “OutKast and the Rise of the Hip-Hop South.”
The course will fall under the English department and will ask students to analyze Outkast albums as well as other hip hop and place the music and lyrics into contemporary cultural and political movements like Black Lives Matter. The class is being taught by PhD Regina Bradley, a professor of Literature and Philosophy at Armstrong State who is extremely qualified to teach the course; she has a book on Outkast coming out later this year. Naturally, the class is already full.
While Outkast hasn’t released an album in over a decade (despite fans’ continued pleas), their influence is undeniable. Andre 3000 contributes a few memorable verses each year, and Big Boi has stayed active with Big Grams and has a new album on the way.
Did any of your colleges teach something like this?
